The Eighth Doctor
Paul McGann (1996- )
We were treated to a taste of the return of Doctor Who in the Spring/Summer of
1996, with a made for TV Doctor Who movie, in which Paul McGann took on
the role of the Doctor, and had Eric Roberts portraying a ghoulishly existing Master.
The movie was received with mixed reactions, and talks are still up
in the air as to what may come of it, many still hope it will lead into a return of the series, or
even just more TV movies, but as the Doctor said "Time will tell, it always does..."
* I suppose you were wondering what all these little *'s were along the way, hmm? Well these are denoting the
missing episodes.
That's right, in a vile and unthinkable act, the BBC a long time ago started
pitching out their old copies of the early Doctor Who episodes. Sadly much
of the works by William Hartnell, and Patrick Troughton were lost, but the
search goes on for those old episodes, there has been hope, as quite a few
have been found....Here in detail is a list of those episodes that are among
the missing, expanding upon the *'s up top.

Invasion of the Dinosaurs : Episode 1
This Jon Pertwee story was accidentaly erased when it was mistaken for the
1968 Troughton episode The Invasion, making it the only break in
the Third Doctor's era. For overseas release the story has been re-edited
into a five part serial rather than the original six. Fortunately in
a search for the older, missing episodes, Episode 1 was found along with
several others. With current technology and trends towards colourizing the
black and white stories of the Third Doctor, hopefully we will see this episode
again.
Note the colourization process is not as cheesy at a Ted Turner
special.
The restoration process is based on combining the colour signal from
an American off-air betamax videotape, with the BBC's high resolution black &
white film recordings
The first stage of the work was to have the 16mm film recordings transferred
to videotape. The team had experienced problems with scratches, dirt and sparkle on
the film prints so the BBC agreed to have brand-new prints made especially for the project.
A process called "wet-gate printing" was used, in which the original negative
film is immeresed in a liquid which fills in the scratches on the film,
rendering the invisible on the new print.
The film recordings were transferred to tape in the BBC's Telecine department.
At the same time as the telecine work was being done, the American off-air recordings were
being converted to PAL video standard, and copied to a new set of tapes.
Several of these colourized stories have been released on video and I have seen
the Terror of the Autons, and was fairly impressed, the colour was a nice
touch I thought and looked a lot like an original 1971 broadcast.
Shada : Episodes 1 - 6
This Tom Baker story didn't make it to air, since it was never completed.
Filmed in 1979, a strike of some sort at the BBC caused this one to be interrupted
and never completed. It is however available on video! A few years ago, BBC Video compoiled
all available filmed and recorded sequences, linking them together with Tom Baker's naration.
It's not a bad tale, and even though entire episodes are missing from the sequence, it still holds
together.
Allow K-9 to take you Back.
